CUMMER MUSEUM OF ART AND GARDENS
"A Night at the Opera: Historic and Contemporary Performance Costumes," a unique display of authentic costumes worn by
legendary opera stars, on display May 9 thru August 10. Permanent collection spans 12 galleries and features an impressive array of Western art from

FIRST LADY OF JACKSONVILLE
See the St. Johns River aboard a paddleboat for sightseeing, lunch, field trips and private charters. Daily.
FORT CAROLINE NATIONAL MEMORIAL
French Huguenots landed at this site in 1564, establishing the first Protestant colony in North America. Today the park encompasses 680
acres and includes a replica of the fort, a museum filled with French and Native American artifacts, and a nature trail. Daily, 9
a.m.-5 p.m.; free.
JACKSONVILLE MARITIME MUSEUM
Model ships, paintings, photos and artifacts relating to local maritime history beginning in 1842
and continuing through World War II. Landing: Mon-Sat, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sun, 1-5 p.m.; Riverwalk: Mon-Sat, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sun,
1-5 p.m.; free.
JACKSONVILLE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
Permanent collection includes art by Louise Nevelson, a variety of modern paintings,
an impressive pre-Columbian art exhibit, and a sculpture garden.
JACKSONVILLE ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS
Check out the Birds of the Rift Valley Aviary with
more than 75 birds in free flight, and the 1,200-foot boardwalk overlooking animals
on the 20-acre Plains of East Africa exhibit.
See Mahali Pa Simba (Place of the Lions), a one-acre home to two adult lions and two lion cubs.
The Okavango Village features
unique animals which can be viewed from a boardwalk along the Trout River that leads to a
domesticated animal petting area.
THE BEACHES
Just 12 miles east of Jacksonville are what locals refer to as "The Beaches" -- Mayport,
Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach,
Neptune Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, and, farther south, South Ponte Vedra Beach, North
Beach and Vilano Beach. They're accessible by Atlantic Blvd. (S.R. 10), Beach Blvd.
(U.S. Hwy. 90), 9A, J. Turner Butler Blvd. and U.S. Hwy. A1A.
Besides the more than 50 miles of white-sand beaches, you'll find a variety of shopping areas
along Hwy. A1A, which winds its way down the beaches, from Amelia Island to the north and
St.Augustine to the south. The attractions, restaurants, and boutiques that fill these coastal areas
provide an enjoyable recess from the surf and sand.
ATP TOUR INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS
The home of the men's professional tennis tour features grass, European red clay and
cushioned hard courts, instruction by former Tour players, catering
and banquet facilities, and is also the site of the Claude Nolan Tennis Classic each
October. Restaurant, pro shop, private lessons
and instructional clinics are open to the public.
BEAKS
Bird Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary
Every year, the Bird Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary
(BEAKS) raises and cares for thousands of injured wild birds, including eagles, pelicans, owls
and ospreys. The sanctuary, started 12 years ago, is open to the public. Fri-Sat,
noon-5 p.m.
BIG TALBOT ISLAND
This undeveloped beach recreation area plays
host to sun lovers and watersports enthusiasts who may drive and park on the sand.
The beach can be reached via Little Talbot
Island State Park.
THE BUCCANEER TRAIL
Beginning on Hwy. A1A on Amelia Island, the 52-mile scenic
route is one of the most beautiful drives in Florida. The Trail takes you past
beautiful beaches, including Little Talbot Island State Park, and over several
inlets and rivers that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. If you enjoy fishing, be sure to take along your
tackle and pole. From Amelia Island to the Trail's end in St. Augustine, historical
sites such as Kingsley Plantation and the Castillo de San Marcos are just a turn away.
HUGUENOT MEMORIAL PARK
A beach area where surfing, boardsailing, fishing and swimming are popular activities.
Tent and RV camping is permitted, no hook-ups.
JACKSONVILLE BEACH FISHING PIER
This 983-foot-long pier has long been a popular spot for anglers, surfers and sightseers. Daily, 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
KATHRYN ABBEY HANNA PARK
Located south ofMayport off Hwy. A1A, this 450-acre oceanfront park has a 1.5-mile-long beach, nature trails, 300 campsites,
picnic areas and 60 acres of freshwater fishing lakes. Mountain bikers enjoy the park's challenging off-road
trails.
KINGSLEY PLANTATION
Florida's oldest-standing plantation where, during the early 1800s, Zephaniah Kingsley s slaves produced sugarcane and
Sea Island cotton.
Kingsley conducted many agricultural experiments, and did much to further the cultivation of
citrus fruits in
Florida. A true nonconformist and classical scholar, Kingsley was married to Anna Madgigine
Jai, a black woman who reportedly
presided over the Fort George Island household. The original plantation house and ruins of the
tabby slave quarters still stand.

LA CRUISE
Casino gambling, suntanning, and dancing to live music
aboard a 250-foot oceangoing cruise ship. Day cruises: Sun, 1-6 p.m.; Wed, Sat, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.;

LITTLE TALBOT ISLAND STATE PARK
This park has miles of beautiful
uncrowded beaches, campsites, picnic areas, nature trails and fishing. Daily, 8 a.m.-sunset
MAYPORT AND THE MAYPORT FERRY
One of the oldest fishing villages in the nation,
Mayport is home to a large commercial shrimp boat fleet. The Mayport Ferry (270-2520) transports cars across the St. Johns
River to and from Mayport and
Fort George Island. The ferry is a popular way to reach Amelia Island following the Buccaneer
Trail. Daily, 6:15 a.m.-10:15 p.m.;
MAYPORT NAVAL STATION
One of the largest U.S. Navy bases on the East Coast, Mayport was commissioned in 1942,
and was used by patrol craft, rescue boats and Jeep carriers. Public tours of the base, its cruisers,
destroyers and frigates can be arranged.
TOURNAMENT PLAYERS CLUB AT SAWGRASS
One of 19 Tournament Players
Clubs (TPC) in the U.S., the TPC at Sawgrass is the site of The Players Championship, the PGA
Tour golf tournament that draws
the world's best golfers to the First Coast each March.
