By staying with us in the Daytona Beach area, you'll be in the perfect spot to make the most of your vacation days. Wherever your Central Florida vacation takes you, remember you're only an hour's drive from a day at the beach.

PLACES TO GO/ THINGS TO DO

HALIFAX HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Housed at the site of the old Merchant's Bank building, this museum features Indian and Spanish artifacts found at nearby plantations, memorabilia from the early days of beach automobile racing and a newspaper file which dates back to 1883. A video showcases the history of the Daytona Beach area. The museum also features a miniature, wood-carved replica of the Boardwalk area in 1938.
THE MUSEUM OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
Located in the scenic Tuscawilla Preserve, this 60-acre site features a new "Window in the Forest" Interpretative Center which provides information about the coastal hammock environment. The museum features multi-cultural exhibitions in art, science and history. The Dow Gallery of American Art features the best survey collection of American art in the Southeast, showcasing paintings, sculpture, furniture, silver, crystal and glass from 1640 to 1920.
PONCE DE LEON INLET LIGHTHOUSE
Constructed over 100 years ago, the 175-foot lighthouse is the second tallest lighthouse in the United States and it still serves as a faithful guide to Atlantic coast mariners. Located at Ponce Inlet, the area's southernmost point, the lighthouse grounds features one of Florida's largest maritime museums. The grounds include historical displays, a video depicting the lighthouse's history, a rare Fresnel Lens Exhibit, and a gift shop full of treasures. A 203-step climb to the top of the lighthouse provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Daytona Beach area. Hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily with extended summer hours.
BULOW PLANTATION RUINS STATE HISTORIC SITE
These are the ruins of what was once a thriving plantation, "Bulow Ville." Founded in 1821, the plantation was known for its crops of sugar cane, cotton, indigo and rice. What is left today are the regal coquina-rock ruins of a sugar mill, a spring house and a foundation. An open-air museum features Seminole Indian relics and artifacts. The cleared fields have been reclaimed by forest, and the area looks much as it did in the 1800s. Picnic facilities and canoe rentals are available. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily.
SNORKELING AND SCUBA DIVING IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
Fresh and saltwater diving and snorkeling are plentiful in the waters of Daytona Beach. In addition to popular rock-ledge reef systems like Party Grounds, East Eleven and others, the area has a number of shipwrecks. The most famous, the Liberty Ship, is a freighter that was loaded with jeeps and other war materials. The area is also "home" to the wrecks of two TB-M torpedo bombers that crashed in area waters during World War II. Check the local phone directory for information and reservations.
SKYCOASTER BOARDWALK AMUSEMENT
Not for the faint of heart, this 100-foot-tall pendulum at the Boardwalk Amusement Area in Daytona Beach gives you a free-fall effect second to none. You'll swoop and soar toward the Atlantic Ocean at speeds approaching 60 mph!

CANOEING
For the canoeing enthusiast, the Daytona Beach area offers an impressive choice of scenic waterways. The following canoe trails are part of the Florida Recreational Trail System, administered by the Florida Department of Natural Resources. Spruce Creek - Trail begins 10 miles west of New Smyrna Beach at the Moody Bridge, 1 mile south of the Port Orange interchange on Interstate 95. It then runs 5 miles upstream and 9 miles downstream. Tomoka River - Trail starts on State Road 40, 1 mile west of Interstate 95 and runs for 13 miles. Bulow Creek - Trail starts at the Bulow Plantation Ruins State Historic Site north of Ormond Beach and runs for 13 miles.
FISHING

Deep Sea: The Daytona Beach area features some of the best ocean fishing found anywhere. Marlin, with an emphasis on Blues, are found in the Gulf Stream. Closer to shore, Sailfish, Dolphin, King Mackerel, Wahoo and Tuna are caught on trolled baits. On the bottom around the numerous reefs, Grouper and Red Snapper are the most avidly sought species while the bruising kingsize Jack Crevalle and Amberjack provide tackle-busting variety. A fleet of nearly 25 offshore craft - including both private charter and party boats - sails daily, most from the docks at Ponce Inlet. The area plays host to the Greater Daytona Beach Striking Fish tournament each May.

Surf and Pier: Surf fishing here is a year-round sport. It requires only medium-weight tackle and some shrimp or mullet for bait. Hard-fighting species like Pompano, Whiting, Bluefish, Redfish, Flounder and Jack Crevalle thrive in the 23-mile stretch of fishing area. Many varieties of fish are caught from the Ocean Pier in the heart of Daytona Beach and the Sunglow Pier located at the southern end of the beach. There is a daily pier charge, with monthly and seasonal passes available.

SURFING
If you're looking for a wave, the Daytona Beach coastal area has many spots suitable for surfing. Generally the breaks are good and you don't have to worry about submerged reefs. You'll find the best swells just south of Daytona Beach at Ponce Inlet. Both the north and south sides are favorites with the locals.

You can surf here year round. In the summer, surf temperatures range from 75 - 82 degrees. Between December and February, the water temperature seldom dips below 58 degrees. The most you'll ever need is a full, three-milimeter wetsuit.
